E12: Brian Mitchell, the “Christmas Lights Detangler”.

Why Listen: Elevating your game as a Project Manager.

Do you question if you are helping or hindering the process at times?  That’s exactly how Brian felt as he was looking to standardize project management systems in the Canadian federal government. This being no small feat.  And when Brian asked this very question, his colleague responded, “You are helping us untangle Christmas lights.”  What a great complement for a generalist!

Brian Mitchell has spent over 35 years in the design and construction industry, 30 of those years as a Project Manager on projects large and small, and many corporate or other projects not related to construction.  He was National Practice Manager for Pivotal Projects (Halsall Engineering) and is a senior consultant for Tiree advising on Project Management Best Practices for Public Services and Procurement Canada, Science and Parliamentary Infrastructure Branch.   

Going back to school became a not unusual thing with Brian as he received a Master of Project Management degree in 2008 and a Ph.D. in Management in 2020.  Brian still returns to school regularly, but now he teaches part-time at Algonquin College in both the Bachelor of Commerce program and the Bachelor of Science, Building Science, program, as well as course development for the College.  At Carleton, he has taught in the Master of Engineering Program and in the Sprott School of Business online MBA program. 

Brian has presented at both industry and academic conferences in North America and Europe, has spoken to various governmental and non-governmental organizations about Project Management.  Brian’s diverse interests over the years have included playing hockey, windsurfing, bagpiping, and executive positions with a number of community and non-profit organizations. her husband live in Massachusetts with their three children.
